Kitchen Organization Day 3: Those Messy Drawers!
Welcome to day 3 of our kitchen organization mini-series!
I’m so glad you are here with me today. If you haven’t seen the previous posts, you can check out posts one and two and catch up with where we are now.
If you’ve been with me the whole time, thank you and I’m proud of you!
Now, let’s get our coffee brewed and get to work!
Drawer Organization
It’s time to tackle those messy drawers in your kitchen. Hopefully, you have some drawer dividers or organizers to help you on this step!
1. Silverware drawer
Pull out all of your silverware and lay it on the counter. I’m going to remind you, yet again, to NOT keep too much.
We don’t need 30 forks and spoons. Ever.
Grab a silverware tray and get it all sorted by like type and size if you want. Wipe or vacuum out the drawer and boom. Done. Easy peasy.
2. Kitchen Utensil Drawer
First, do you want to keep your cookware in a drawer? Some people opt to put their cooking utensils in a container on or beside the stove. If you want to do that, go for it!
I personally have a cooking utensils drawer AND a container on my stove. I keep the things I use daily on the stove like my silicone spoons and spatulas. My drawer is for less frequented items like cake decorating tools, mixers for my hand mixer, potato masher, etc.
Decide how you want to set up your utensils based on what is easiest for YOU.
Where would you go looking for it? Where is easiest to put it back when you are done? Make this work for you. There is no right or wrong answer here.
3. Tupperware Drawer
These could actually be anywhere in your kitchen. Mine happen to be in a deep drawer in my kitchen so I’ll put it here but move this step to whatever area you have them in.
Go through the Tupperware bowls and lids and make sure they are complete sets. Pitch any that are not.
Stack all of your similar-sized Tupperware inside of each other and place all of the lids in a basket beside them. I know it is enticing to put the lids on the bowls but DON’T. They take up way too much space that way.
4. Dishrag Drawer
I have all my dishrags, dishtowels, and pot holders in my top drawer in my kitchen.
Inspect them all and pitch any with holes. Get them all folded up neat and together by like kinds.
You can just lay them in there or use drawer dividers to be more efficient.
5. Storage Drawer
You may or may not have a storage drawer for things like foil, butcher paper, and ziplock bags. If not, just skip this step.
If you do, gather all of these things and make sure they are together by size. Just straighten up the drawer in a way that makes the most sense.
If you use ziplock bags every day, pull them to the front. If you touch the butcher paper once a year, move it all the way to the back so it isn’t in your way.
6. Junk Drawer
Shhh. It’s ok. We all have a junk drawer somewhere in our kitchen.
I like to ignore my junk drawer but two to three times a year I go through it a reorganize all over again. It has gotten so much better over the last year.
I always start by getting a small container to put items that don’t belong in the kitchen and then dump the whole drawer out on the counter.
Once you do this, pitch anything that is broken or you don’t need if you haven’t already or if you find more things that can go.
Now, little drawer organizers or a big tray organizer are GREAT for this step. I organize my junk drawer by putting all of the like items in each compartment of the tray organizer.
In all reality, most of the stuff could probably find a home somewhere else. If it can, DO THAT. There are some things that I just prefer to stay in the kitchen for quick and easy access.
Set it up however works best for you. Organizing is all about functionality for yourself.
If it can go in another room to be organized later, put it in a shoebox tote for now to get it out of the drawer. DON’T put it back in there and think you will move it later because I promise, you probably won’t.
Until Tomorrow…
We’ve made it through the worst part of kitchen organization now. Tomorrow we will hit the pantry in our day 4 post. This will be MUCH easier to go through than the stuff we have already done.
I can’t wait to see you and as always, please don’t hesitate with any comments, questions, or concerns.
